The hidden cost of 'I'll figure out the platform later'

A pattern I keep seeing with coaches and teachers going online: they spend weeks comparing Teachable vs Kajabi vs Podia, can't decide, and default to "I'll just use Zoom and a payment link for now."

That decision feels free. It isn't.

Here's what the DIY stack actually costs when you add it up:

  • Zoom Pro: ~$15/month
  • Scheduling (Calendly or similar): ~$10/month
  • Payment links with no course structure: you lose every student who wants to re-watch the session
  • Delivery: recordings live in Drive links that get shared freely, so your paid product leaks
  • Admin time: manually tracking who paid, who attended, who gets which link — easily 2-3 hours per cohort

The real cost isn't the $25/month in tools. It's that the business looks unprofessional exactly at the moment you're asking strangers to trust you with money.

The opposite failure mode is equally common: committing to $149/month for Kajabi before the first sale, because it "looks serious."

The sane middle path for most people starting out:

  1. One platform that handles payment + live session + recording in the same place.
  2. No fixed monthly cost until revenue exists — commission-only models (iLoquio at 5%, Payhip at 5%, Gumroad at 10%) exist precisely for this phase.
  3. Upgrade to a fixed-fee platform only when the math says so: for iLoquio's model, that's around $1,980/month in sales versus a $99/month tool.

"Later" is a decision too — usually the most expensive one, measured in lost students and admin hours.

What did your stack look like when you made your first sale?
