I paid my target audience to speak with me

A couple weeks ago I hired 4-5 freelancers on Upwork to discuss a problem I wanted to solve. The outcome was that I pivoted already on the idea stage because, as it turned out, my initial target audience (marketers) didn't feel my problem as badly I thought.

I wonder if anyone else has done the same and what's your experience. Please discuss below.
